Elevate Your Practice: Intermediate Yoga Poses for Progression
As you gain confidence and experience in your yoga journey, progressing to intermediate poses can deepen your practice and expand your physical and mental boundaries. 1. Extended Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana):
- Start in a wide-legged stance with your feet about 3-4 feet apart.
- Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and align your heel with the arch of your left foot.
- Extend your arms parallel to the floor, hinge at your right hip, and reach your right hand toward your right foot.
- Gaze up at your left hand and feel the lengthening and opening of your torso, legs, and hips.
2. Revolved Side Angle Pose (Parivrtta Parsvakonasana):
- Begin in a lunge position with your right foot forward.
- Place your left hand on the floor or a block on the inside of your right foot.
- Twist your torso to the right, reaching your right arm toward the sky.
- Engage your core, open your chest, and feel the detoxifying twist.
3. Crow Pose (Bakasana):
- Start in a squat position with your feet slightly apart.
- Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the floor in front of you.
- Lean forward, engage your core, and lift your feet off the ground, balancing on your hands.
- Find stability, focus your gaze, and gradually increase the duration of your hold.
4. Camel Pose (Ustrasana):
- Kneel on the floor with your knees hip-width apart.
- Place your hands on your lower back, fingers pointing down.
- Press your hips forward, arch your back, and gently reach for your heels.
- Expand your chest, lift your heart, and breathe deeply into the front of your body.
5. Firefly Pose (Tittibhasana):
- Begin in a squat position with your feet hip-width apart and hands on the floor.
- Walk your hands forward between your legs, placing them shoulder-width apart.
- Shift your weight onto your hands, engage your core, and lift your feet off the ground.
- Straighten your arms, extend your legs, and find balance in this challenging arm balance pose.
6. Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana):
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet hip-width apart.
- Place your hands by your ears, fingers pointing toward your shoulders.
- Press into your hands and feet, lift your hips, and come onto the crown of your head.
- Straighten your arms and legs, open your chest, and find strength and openness in your backbend.
7. Supported Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana):
- Find a clear wall space and kneel facing the wall.
- Place your forearms on the floor, interlace your fingers, and create a stable triangle with your forearms and head.
- Lift your knees off the ground, walk your feet toward your face, and engage your core.
- Slowly lift both feet off the ground, extending your legs vertically, and find stability and balance.
